Academics - Lower School Life February 9, 2009 Kindergarten: Morning Meeting in Mrs. Tedesco’s Class View all photos from Morning Meeting in Mrs. Tedesco's class The school day “officially” gets underway in Audrey Tedesco’s kindergarten class with Morning Meeting at 8:30 a.m. I use officially because this is preceded by 20 The Morning Meeting begins with “The Greeting Song,” and on this particular day was followed by “Bring Back My Bonnie To Me.” Immediately after the musical kickoff, the Friend of the Day, Sarina, was introduced. The class passed Sarina’s photo around the room and Mrs. Tedesco and Sarina unveiled the “Guessing Jar,” which on this day was filled with candy hearts. All of the students then wrote down their estimates of how many hearts were contained in the jar.
Mrs. Tedesco then asked her aspiring meteorologists (they could probably equal or better the efforts of TV talking heads, couldn’t they?) to provide a weather report and the general consensus was “sunny.” It was reinforced to the students that they were collecting “data” which is another word for information.
Sarina delivered the morning message, which Mrs. Tedesco wrote on a white board: “Good morning. Today is Monday. We have two specials. It is sunny.” It was pointed out that in addition to the beginning of the sentences, the word Monday was capitalized because it was a “proper” word like names and places. The students were then challenged to identify the words as Mrs. Tedesco pointed to them. The big news at the meeting was that not one, not two, but three students had lost teeth over The class then transitioned into a discussion of the book cover for “Caps, Hats, Socks, Mitten,” by Louise Borden. Students were prompted to identify artwork on the cover that related to each of the four seasons. They came to the front of the class and pointed out what they saw and how it related to a certain season. I found myself catching my breath after 45 minutes…and it was only 9:15 a.m! This is the first installment of Lower School Life – a new feature on the MFS website for current and prospective MFS families.
